life
Özgecan Kesici (she/her) was born in Munich to Kazakh-Turkish parents. After spending a substantial part of her adult life in Dublin, she now lives in Berlin.
For her debut novel, Silver is Lighter, a historical female epic, she was awarded a 2022 Berlin Senate Literature Work Stipend.
She is the recipient of an Irish Arts Council Agility Award and the Literature Bursary for her poetry. Credits include: Banshee, Honey Literary, Poetry Ireland Review.
She speaks Kazakh, Turkish, English, German, French, and Russian, has taken the Summer School for Literary Translation in Poetry, University of East Anglia, and works as a literary translator.
She received a German Translation Fund (DÜF) Initiative Scholarship to translate Ozan Zakariya Keskinkılıç’s debut poetry collection, prinzenbad (Elif Verlag, 2022).
Her translation of Rakhymzhan Otarbayev's Kazakh short stories, Der Verräter - Сатқын, is set to be published with Dağyeli Verlag, 2024.
Özgecan holds a PhD in Sociology from University College Dublin on the Kazakh Alash Movement, 2017.
She is represented by Brian Langan at The Storyline Literary Agency.
